Alex Keil steps into the spotlight for this member profile.
VCAC: Your name?
AK: Alex Keil
VCAC: Which sport(s) do you/did you participate in?
AK: Running! However, I would like to get back into cycling at some point: which I did recreationally before taking up running.
VCAC: When did you become a veggie, and why?
AK: July 2016: for many, many, reasons, the most prominent being the effects that pastoral farming is having on the natural environment and wildlife.
VCAC: What’s your favourite veggie food?
AK: Tangine chickpeas: a great, simple source of energy and very tasty.
VCAC: Could you recommend a good veggie café/restaurant?
AK: The Health Warehouse: a massive choice of great tasting food, kind service and all vegetarian or vegan friendly. You will not go hungry!
VCAC: Thinking about your sporting activities, what’s your favourite event to participate in?
AK: A 10k race.
VCAC: What’s your favourite sports event to watch?
AK: The drama that is cycling! However, snooker is very relaxing and ideal to doze off to!
VCAC: Are there any other sports you’d like to try?
AK: Competitively? Cycling.
VCAC: What made you start participating?
AK: After running for a few years to simply keep a decent level of fitness, in May 2016 I turned up to parkrun one day to see what time I could put up for a 5k race. I was under seventeen minutes and after a few more runs, where I kept improving, I was enticed to join a local running club.
VCAC: Do you/did you always train purposefully, or just for fun?
AK: As I am really trying to improve, I am grinding through some tough sessions, which aren’t the most enjoyable. However, I have never enjoyed running so much as I do now, and feel full of guilt/regret if I go for a day without some kind of run! Not much can top the liberating feel of a run of around ten miles in the countryside for me right now!
VCAC: Do you/did you prefer to be on trails/off road, or on the road?
AK: Trails. As long as they are in decent shape and not caked in mud!
VCAC: What is your favourite distance to run/cycle?
AK: When not running competitively, ten miles. Distance enough to take in some good sights!
VCAC: Which events are on your ‘must do’ or ‘would like to do’ list?
AK: Any race really where there is spectacular natural scenery.
VCAC: What are your plans, sporting wise, for the next few years?
AK: To keep improving whilst really enjoying the whole camaraderie and experience of running. Goal-wise it has to be to break 15 minutes for 5k. If my times reach a peak for 5k,10k then I will seriously consider going down the route of marathons/ultras.
VCAC: What is favourite post-event/post-training treat?
AK: A bottle of water with or without electrolytes.
VCAC: Do you have any tips for those starting out in your sport?
AK: Know that the first steps are always the hardest. Start with small distances and gradually increase.
VCAC: What is your favourite bit of kit?
AK: A Club Vest.
VCAC: What would you recommend as a good food for refuelling on those long runs/bike-rides?
AK: A good protein bar won’t go amiss!
VCAC: What’s your most embarrassing mishap at an event?
AK: Going the wrong way, 3 times, on my first parkrun!
VCAC: Tell us a surprising fact about yourself?
AK: Favourite music genre: delta blues.
