This time we are spotlighting Lee Tooey: a man of many trades (or at least, sports) it appears.
VCAC: Your name?
VCAC: Which sport(s) do you, or did you participate in?
VCAC: Which year did you become a veggie and why?
LT: I went from meat eater to vegan in Feb 2015, initially for pure health reasons and to lose more weight, after doing some research about being Vegan. Once I’d changed, the ethics side stuck with me.
VCAC: What’s your favourite veggie food?
LT: I get through about 8 bananas a day!
VCAC: Could you recommend a good veggie café or restaurant?
LT: The Oaktree Market in Leigh-on-sea, Essex
VCAC: Thinking about your sporting activities, what’s your favourite event to participate in?
LT: I prefer Audax UK events, working may way through 300k events at the moment.
VCAC: What’s your favourite sports event to watch?
LT: I enjoy Mixed Martial Arts
VCAC: Are there any other sports you’d like to try?
LT: I’m looking at trying my hand at MTB and Cyclocross
VCAC: What made you start participating?
LT: I want to spread the message that being Vegan is great for sport. However you can’t just talk about it. People only judge on results!
VCAC: Do you, or did you, always train purposefully, or just for fun?
LT: All self defence and MMA classes were just for fun. Every bike ride is a training ride!
VCAC: Do you, or did you, prefer to be on trails, off road, or on the road?
LT: On road: however my navigation on my own long distance rides sometimes puts me off road or onto dodgy paths.
VCAC: What is your favourite distance to run/cycle?
LT: Sixty miles cycling is a training ride, I see one hundred miles as a good day out, and I’m working up to my next two hundred mile ride soon.
VCAC: Which events are on your ‘must do’ or ‘would like to do’ list?
LT: A transcontinental race, if I can get the time off!
VCAC: What are your plans, sporting wise, for the next few years?
LT: Keep cycling, join some more Audax rides and run a half marathon.
VCAC: What is your favourite post-event/post-training treat?
LT: Linda Mcartney pies! Only one though! And an alcohol free kopperburg
VCAC: Do you have any tips for those starting out in your sport?
LT: Just get yourself a bike and work on your distances slowly. Nobody cares how slow you ride, if you have to push your bike up a hill, or if you have to stop for lunch!
VCAC: What is your favourite bit of kit?
LT: D2D Neoprene waterproof gloves.
VCAC: What would you recommend as a good food for refuelling on those long runs/bike-rides?
VCAC: What’s your most embarrassing mishap at an event?
LT: Riding for forty miles on a wheel so buckled that my back brakes were locked on. It took me ages to figure out why I was so slow, why I was getting dropped and why my legs hurt so much!
VCAC: Tell us a surprising fact about yourself?
LT: I was always terrible at sports at school and I hated physical training in the Military (even though it was free).
