The Great Brighton and back Race 1895
“The Peckham CC ran this as an annual event. On 17 Aug 1895 9 riders started. A.R.Wyatt a new member of the Veg and The Peckham’s Captain won in club record time of 6hrs 15 mins, a 20 improvement on club record and a 45 min improvement on his previous best on an orthodox diet. John Parsley failed to finish, riding a tricycle of his own make (he was a well know maker at the time with a brand name “Encore”)
He had earlier set the last paced trike record at 6hrs 18 mins 28 secs (RRA handbook) or according to the magazine 6hrs 20 mins. Had he finished, Henry Light opined he would have beaten all the bike riders.”
